This past Monday the Music Therapy Department added a new intern to their team. Katy Hinckley is from Deland, Florida and has 3 siblings, which are all brothers. She completed her course work in music therapy at Converse College in Spartanburg, South Carolina. Katy had the opportunity to complete practicums with pre-school students, assisted living residents, and both hospice and pediatric patients while completing her undergrad course work.  On top of her music therapy degree requirements, she also completed an equivalency certificate in oboe performance, which was her primary instrument.

Outside of class, Katy was involved in Musicians Helping Others an organization led by music therapy majors but also open for any other student musicians on campus.  This organization would develop programs that would bring music to the community through having benefit concerts, community drum circles, and more. A portion of the money made from these programs was reinvested in different organizations within their community.  She was involved in several ensembles on campus such as orchestra, wind, and chamber ensembles.

Katy was drawn to music therapy because of the power of the musical relationship developed between the client and therapist. Another aspect of music therapy that she enjoys is the effect music has on individuals, even when they are not fully oriented with themselves. Katy mentioned that she experienced this mostly when working with hospice care during her undergrad. She selected STAR as her internship site due to having the opportunity to learn and serve a variety of client populations. One goal that Katy would like to accomplish while interning at STAR is to improve her guitar skills.

Some of Katy’s hobbies included playing oboe, sewing, crocheting, watching Netflix, and drinking coffee. One of her unique/quirky habits is that she counts everything…mostly steps, stairs, and letters. In three words, Katy described herself as quiet, caring, and chill.

Katy’s favorite songs from her childhood/teenage years that she still rocks out to when nobody else is listening is anything Disney related. Her first concert that she ever went to was Colony House, which surprisingly was only last year. Katy’s favorite CD she has ever owned is Relient K. When it comes to genre of music she enjoys listening to most, she prefers to listen to solo acoustic music (eg. Colbie Calliat, Chase Coy, Jason Mraz, etc.). An instrument Katy has always wanted to learn to play is the cello.
