Michael Brown In Home Care's Success Story

Micheal's Story

Meet Michael, a true example of strength and determination. With the support of The STAR Center’s In-Home Companion Care, Michael has made incredible strides toward independence and a better quality of life. His journey shows just how powerful compassionate care can be in helping people overcome challenges and achieve their goals. Michael’s story is a reminder of the difference The STAR Center makes in the lives of those we serve.

Before discovering The STAR Center, Michael was cared for by his mother until she passed away in January 2021. After her passing, his caregiver—who had over 22 years of experience—stepped in to provide support. However, balancing Michael’s needs with planning for his future was a challenge. It wasn't until almost a year later that they heard about The STAR Center through a neighbor. After learning about the life-changing support available, they reached out to begin their journey with us.

Through The STAR Center's In-Home Companion Care program, Michael has received personalized help while maintaining his independence. The impact was immediate. With support from the STAR Center, he was able to continue his education, participate in social activities, and plan for his future—all things that once felt out of reach.

One of Michael's proudest achievements was starting college at Jackson State Community College. The STAR Center helped him get started and was even able to provide resources like a new computer and a larger monitor to meet his academic needs to help him succeed.

Michael has big dreams. With a passion for cybersecurity and fraud investigation, he hopes to work with a friend who specializes in bank fraud investigations. He’s set to graduate from Jackson State Community College in May 2026, and after that, he plans to gain work experience with law enforcement before pursuing his Bachelor’s degree.

Transportation also became a challenge when his van broke down. With guidance from The STAR Center, they were able to raise funds to purchase a new van. “Having a reliable van allowed Michael to stay engaged in his community and continue his education without the barrier of an inadequate vehicle,” his caregiver said.

When asked what advice they’d give someone considering In-Home Companion Care, Michael and his caregiver say, "If you need help, don’t hesitate to reach out. The STAR Center’s In-Home Companion Care team is an incredible resource—they truly care about the people they serve."

"I’ve never had a better experience here than anywhere else. I knew they would take really good care of me, and my best interests were always their priority. They’ve never let us down." -Michael.
