Self Care: You Gotta Nourish To Flourish

A red heart with white arms and legs holding hand with a purple brain with white arms and legs, with yellow stars above where their hands connect.

Self-Care is a phrase we hear often these days. When working in a profession that is centered on helping others, it’s easy to forget that we need to take care of ourselves too. Self-care isn’t selfish; in fact, it’s necessary to avoid burnout in the workplace.

Practicing good self-care doesn’t have to involve meditating for hours or drinking kale smoothies. Below are a few simple ways you can insert some self-care into your daily routine that don’t require very much time, energy, or money.

Drink more water

Water is essential to our well-being. Next time you pass by that water fountain at work, stop and grab a drink! Or, invest in a water bottle that keeps track of how much water you are drinking. Here’s a link to my favorite: Camelbak Magnetic Water Bottle

Take a moment to breathe

Feeling stressed? Take a deep breath. Breath is the link between our body and our mind. For both to function well, they need oxygen!

Go outside

Vitamin D can improve mood, energy levels, and your immune system! Go ahead, take a moment to soak up the sun.

Unplug

Put down your phone, even if it’s just for a few minutes. Turn on some tunes, doodle, daydream, take a short walk, or just sit in silence for a few minutes.

Spend time with loved ones

Quality time with family and friends is a great way to relax and recharge. Surround yourself with people that lift you up, not weigh you down.

Talk to yourself like you would talk to a friend

Self-compassion is easier said than done. Treating yourself kindly can boost your health, happiness, and even your work ethic. Don’t dwell on mistakes, give yourself some grace!

Showing up for yourself is one of the most challenging things we can do. There isn’t a “one size fits all” to self-care. You must find what works for you. We live in a world of instant-this, “Go, Go, Go” and “Work harder”. Just remember, the old phrase “You cannot pour from an empty cup.” Don’t wait until you’ve reached a breaking point. Start some simple self-care today!

You’ve got to nourish yourself to flourish!
